A Day of Mindfulness: Stopping, Calming, Resting

Stopping, Calming, Resting

A Day of Mindfulness

Saturday June 15

10am - 4pm

“Our true home is what the Buddha called the island of self, the peaceful place inside of us. Often times we don’t notice it’s there; we don’t really know where we are, because our outer or inner environment is filled with noise. We need some quietness to find that island of self.”
Silence-The Power of Quiet in a World Full of Noise, Thich Nhat Hanh

Join us for a day of stopping, calming, and resting to resource and replenish ourselves.

The day will include silent sitting meditation, mindful movement, a Dharma talk, mindful eating, deep relaxation accompanied by live music of Chris Beland, and mindfulness through art and creativity by artist Linda Elder.

  • All interested practitioners are welcome and no prior experience is necessary.
  • This retreat will be held in person at the White Heron Sangha Meditation Center.
  • Noble silence will be observed throughout the day.
  • Dress comfortably and bring a yoga mat, small blanket or throw and something soft for under your head to build a nest for deep relaxation (you may bring a reclining chair if you are not able to lie down during deep relaxation).
  • Bring your lunch. Tea and snacks will be available.
  • Registration for this retreat is required and space is limited. There is no fee and dāna will be accepted.

Chris Beland is a local musician, singer, and song writer in the style of troubadours like Neil Young. Bob Dylan, and Andrew Bird. He plays Celtic harp, guitar, and other string instruments.

Ferri Fathi Erickson is a long-time dharma practitioner in Thich Nhat Hanh’s tradition of Plum Village Community of Engaged Buddhism.  Ferri facilitates the Peace in Our Hearts Mindfulness Practice Circle at the White Heron Sangha on the first and third Thursdays of each month.

Laura Bennett has been a Zen student and practitioner, on and off, for four decades. Laura had a long career as a child and family psychotherapist and as a social worker providing permanency for children through adoption and found her Buddhist practice of great value in her career.  Laura is a certified yoga teacher.

Linda Elder began her Buddhist practice in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh and now practices Insight meditation in the Theravada tradition. Linda studied art and psychotherapy in the mid-90s. She used art therapy in her practice both with children and adults.  She enjoys playing with a variety of art materials, painting, making artists books and finding joy in expressive arts.
