Mantras have a long history of multi-purpose use in both Theravada & Vajrayana Buddhist traditions. They might be employed to focus the mind and set intention, act as a form of protection from unwholesome or unhealthy mental activity, a means to connect "vibrationally" with benevolent guides such as bodhisattvas or wise teachers, etc., etc. Gathas, although used in the past to some degree, have been popularized in the West in recent times by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh as a powerful daily mindfulness aid. In tonight's session, we'll look at the similarities and differences of these two tools and explore how they might benefit our spiritual practice.
