Metta for Asian / Pacific Americans

Since the pandemic began there has been an increase in racial aggression toward Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. This has taken the form of verbal abuse, physical abuse, civil right violations and online harassment. This heartbreaking increase in violence has made many Buddhist practitioners wish to be able to do something to alleviate the suffering. This event series is aimed at providing an opportunity to show support through our loving attention and our spiritual presence.

The event is structured in two parts. The first is an opportunity to show support by attending the May We Gather event online at 4PM on Tuesday May 4th. This event is a National Buddhist Memorial Ceremony for Asian American Ancestors. We are invited to provide supportive presence for this ceremony
.

The second part of the event is a three session series of metta meditations, guided by sangha member Nisa King. Nisa will guide us in providing loving-kindness and prayers for the safety and wellbeing of all Asian / Pacific Americans and also wishes that the people who cause harm may find peace and freedom from fear and hatred. These sessions will be held Mondays at 6PM for about 45 minutes on May 10, 17 and 24 online in the "morning sit" community zoom room.  Between sessions we are encouraged to continue the metta practice daily.

Everyone is welcome!

What is the practice?
Metta practice is the practice of loving kindness. In this practice we begin by setting a specific intention. In this case our intention is that all Asian / Pacific Americans feel safe and welcome in this country and that all people who cause harm be free from fear and hated. We ask forgiveness from the universe for any ways we have contributed to this racial suffering. We imagine ourselves gathered in our center and then progressively relax our bodies and minds. Once relaxed, we visualize or feel the presence of those we are doing metta for and provide them with specific wishes. After a time we invite them to leave and we dissolve the visualization or feeling and just sit for a while longer.
