Sustaining Being Mindful of Race will meet Thursday, January 20th, 6:30 - 8:00 PM on zoom. Everyone is welcome!

We will practice while watching the 18 minute film, Restrictions Apply, then have a discussion about what has come up for us.

Have you ever wondered how history affects our neighborhoods? And why just 2% of the San Luis Obispo county population is black? The film is about racially restrictive covenants that are said to have affected as many as half of all American homes. In particular, these covenants exist on deeds in our own county. We will consider how these now-illegal covenants may have affected the demographics of our neighborhoods today.

One racial covenant in San Luis Obispo states:
No persons of any race other than the Caucasian race shall use or occupy any building or any lot, except that this covenant shall not prevent occupancy by domestic servants of a different race domiciled with an owner or tenant.
(SLO County Official Record 1521; Book 276; Page 189)

As we meet, we would like to keep in mind the practice of Mindful Sharing.
