The topic for this month’s meeting is Microaggressions and Othering, which Alice will be facilitating. Everyone is welcome to join the meeting. You do not have to have done the BMOR class series to attend.

From Wikipedia:
Psychologist Derald Wing Sue defines microaggressions as"brief, everyday exchanges that send denigrating messages to certain individuals because of their group membership"The persons making the comments may be otherwise well-intentioned and unaware of the potential impact of their words.

The videos linked below explore what microagressions are and why they are so damaging to those who constantly receive them. Please watch these before the meeting.

If Microaggressions Happened to White People | Decoded | MTV News [video 2:40]

Embracing otherness, embracing myself | Thandiwe Newton [video 13:55]

Please explore these contemplations related to how we individually identify ourselves as part of a group and others as “different” or “other”:

  • Can I remember a time when I felt excluded by someone's comments? Or when someone reacted to my comments in a way that I did not intend them?
  • Which identities do I consider to be part of “my” group? (Please look at this from a feeling-based perspective - "feel" into your identity with the group). Which gender do I identify with? Which race? What ability? Which age group? Which sexual orientation?
  • Once I know how it feels to be with "my" group, how does it feel to be with people not in "my" group? Can I sense their "otherness"?How would it feel to be the one person who does not fit in?
  • In the final video, Thandiwe Newton explains how she found a way to "oneness" which is beyond her concept of her self. Can I imagine this oneness? How does it feel? How does it feel when I now imagine the "other"?

As we meet, we would like to keep in mind the practice of Mindful Sharing.
