White Heron Sangha welcomes you to a two-day non-residential retreat at our White Heron Meditation Center in Avila Village with Shaila Catherine, an American Buddhist meditation teacher and author in the Theravādan tradition, who is known for her expertise in insight meditation and jhāna practices.
Mental restlessness is an insidious and pervasive hindrance that practitioners struggle to overcome.
We can refine our skills for working with the modes of thinking that distract us from being mindful and attentive: critical thoughts, planning, worrying, lustful thoughts, judging, memories, and internal commentaries, to name a few.
The teachings in this weekend retreat are based on Suttas 19 and 20 in the Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha, one of the major collections of texts in the Pali Canon. They present a sequence of strategies for dealing with obstructive mental patterns that can arise during mindfulness and concentration practice as well as in daily activities.
The retreat is appropriate for all levels of practice. Silence will be observed, unless directed otherwise by the teacher.
Shaila Catherine is the founder of Bodhi Courses, an online dhamma classroom, and Insight Meditation South Bay, a Buddhist meditation center in Silicon Valley in California. She has been practicing meditation since 1980, accumulating more than eight years of silent retreat experience, and has taught internationally since 1996.
She studied with masters in India, Thailand, and Nepal, and also with the founders of western meditation centers. She completed a one-year intensive meditation retreat with the focus on concentration and jhāna, and authored Focused and Fearless: A Meditator’s Guide to States of Deep Joy, Calm, and Clarity.
Shaila practiced intensively under the direction of Venerable Pa-Auk Sayadaw for nine years, absorbing a precise and rigorous approach to śamatha and vipassanā that continues to inform her teaching. She authored Wisdom Wide and Deep: A Practical Handbook for Mastering Jhāna and Vipassanā to help make these techniques accessible to western practitioners.
