White Heron Sangha Picnic

by Rosemary Donnell

You may recall that earlier this year we did a survey asking your opinion of date, time and place for our annual White Heron Sangha potluck picnic. We’re following the winning instructions.

White Heron Sangha members and their family/friends -from North County, South County, and the San Luis Obispo Sangha - are invited to come to a picnic on Sunday, September 9, 2012, from 11:30am to 3:30pm. The location is Meadow Park on South Street near Broad in San Luis Obispo (map). This will be a great opportunity for all three Sanghas to participate in an event together. Please note that there will be no Sangha meeting in San Luis Obispo that evening.

This will be a potluck; most people bring vegetarian food to share, but occasionally people bring non-vegetarian dishes. If you bring a dish that contains meat, unless it’s obvious, it’s best to label it. There’s always plenty to eat at these picnics, so don’t stay away because you can’t bring something.

The Sangha will provide non-alcoholic beverages; our contract with the City of San Luis Obispo doesn’t allow alcohol on the premises. You are encouraged to bring your own utensils, plate, cup etc. We will have some paper plates, cups and plastic utensils available for those who are unable to bring their own.

With the advanced notice, we’re hoping for a larger turnout this year than in the past. As such, you might want to bring your lawn/sports chairs and camp/picnic tables with you, and extras to share.

Besides being able to visit with people you don’t see very often, we will have some games suitable for almost everyone. For the more adventurous, there is a basketball court and a sand volleyball pit very near to the picnic area. Let me know if you have a favorite group picnic game.

Storyteller Zette Harbour will be at the Sangha picnic this year to lead interested participants in an origami peace crane folding activity and tell a story or two. All supplies will be provided. The cranes will be a part of a 1,000 Peace Crane Sculpture that will be unveiled at the Peace Love Story Fest at Camp Ocean Pines on Sept. 16.  The sculpture will then travel around the county to give more people an opportunity to talk about the meaning of peace in their lives.  It will culminate with the International Day of Peace on Sept. 21.

We’re looking for volunteers to help with set up (11-11:30am)/take down (3:30-4:00pm) and other duties. Please contact me at rtdonnell@sbcglobal.net or 772-4580 to volunteer.

Come join us! We’ll have a good time! See you on September 9!
